The Caterpillar 2 Ton crawler tractors were manufactured in the USA from 1925 to 1929. They were a continuation of the Holt 2 Ton tractor after Holt and Best, who were the founders of Caterpillar, decided to merge their competing businesses in 1925. The original price was $US1,850 in 1927. Over 8,000 units were built.
WA Distributors (1947): Wigmores Limited, 613 Wellington Street, Perth.
Technical Specifications: 4-cylinder, 4-stroke petrol/kerosene engine. Bore 3¾” and stroke of 5”. Gears: 3 forward and 1 reverse. Power at belt was 25hp, and at the drawbar, 18.2hp at 1250rpm. Weight 1,832kg/5931lbs.
History: This tractor was acquired as a result of another enthusiast, “Doddy Davies” from Bridgetown, telling Hugh Manning about a collection of tractors coming up for sale. Hugh purchased this 2 Ton at the sale in 1990. The owner had lived in the Grass Patch area, 5kms north of Esperance. He had built a large shed to start restoring tractors, but for personal reasons, the family decided to dispose of the collection.
